Recently, the China Unicom South China IT Industrial Operation Center, designed by gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partner Architects, was completed and put into use in Guangzhou. The corporate campus with garden landscape consists of three parts - 4 Pavilions forming an internal courtyard on the west plot, while there are two square pavilions merged to one building offering space for a big span column free multifunctional hall and other public functions on the east plot. On the southeast corner we established a temporary showroom for China Unicom flagship store with impressive steel structure. The building positions and heights of all volumes are defined by the shading regulation protecting the surrounding residential buildings and to create a vivid street view facade from the adjacent Zhongshan West Avenue.

The green landscape is the main character of the site. The prominent south-east corner of the site is directly opposite the large and generous Tianhe Park. The existing landscape park in the middle of the two plots is lush with green and gentle hills. Employees can go freely between the eastern and western plot via a connecting path across the scenic park. The spacious office spaces are integrated into this lush green garden, giving employees a unique and pleasant work experience. The arrangement of building volumes creates an ensemble that enhances the communication and connection between all units and strengthens the exceptional quality of this city-centered landscape-garden site.

The western pavilions will be used as the Production and Management Offices for China Unicom fully benefiting from the internal courtyard garden and the unobstructed view towards the nearby city spaces and landscape parks. The connecting bridge volumes link all pavilions together and offering additional spaces for meeting rooms.

The offices depth is equivalent and less than 12m, all around thus flexible since easy to split and efficient above 70 %. There are different meeting and public areas in each building part. The different office types in the pavilions are based on the same modular grid so the layout can be easily shifted between small, standard, and large-scale units. This flexibility is continued within the building where horizontal and vertical connections build a various traffic system that could react on small or big function changes and new requirements.

In the eastern building a canteen and a multifunctional hall are arranged on F1 and F2. The multifunctional hall is oriented on the west side facing towards the internal garden, which offers all kinds of outdoor sports facilities for all tenants and employees. The upper Levels of the eastern Building gives space for highly efficient offices.

The façade connects all volumes with a stringently rhythmic vertical layer of silver perforated aluminum panels that guarantees a natural ventilation for all office spaces. The perforated aluminum screens are inspired by the image of the traditional Chinese window.

The big roof steel structure marks the flagship pavilion on the southeast corner and covers parts of the entrance plazas. By installing a set backed curved glass façade a public arcade was created under the roof. This way the main public function of the showroom links best with the urban city spaces and the adjacent metro station.
